I'm heading to my in-laws in Newport News for the holidays, and I'm dreading the food when we eat out. In the past we've gone to Golden Corral, but I just KNOW there have to be better options. They won't go for anything too exotic or too expensive. I could probably get them to go to Williamsburg, which might give us more options.

Krispy Kreme is in Mississauga at Mavis and Britannia. I have not had them yet in Canada, though I have tried on many occasions. There is always a gynormous wait, either drive thru or in store. Personally I love the donuts. I just moved back from Manhattan a few weeks ago and I loved those little pillows of heaven.

Hi all, I've been dying to try natto but thus far have not had any luck finding it, either fresh or frozen, in Halifax NS. I'm tempted to make it myself, however as with any fermented food it would be best to know what it is *supposed* to taste like before venturing it myself.

It's not a sit-down restaurant, but Fuzzy Grub in the City do carvery style stuff to take away every lunchtime. The meat's very good quality and the cooking's pretty decent, i.e. unlike in your typical old school carvery the vegetables aren't boiled to death and the meat isn't over-cooked nor allowed to dry out.

We'll be visiting Edinburgh for five days in early June and would love some restaurant recommendations. We're looking for unpretentious places with delicious food and a warm, neighborhood atmosphere. (Not upscale, Michelin-rated restaurants.) Could be any kind of cuisine. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your replies - I think Glasgow is much more accessible probably because it does not serve a tourist industry the size of Edinburgh - you can come unstuck in Edinburgh and find yourself eating a second rate tourist menu (as you would in Florence,London etc) where Glasgow is more genuine (and friendly).

Hey Janine, Halifax has some great restaurants for you to sample with your friends. My favourites are Fid (www.fidcuisine.ca), Il Mercato (www.il-mercato.ca) and Jane's on the Common (www.janesonthecommon.com).Of the three Fid is my hands down favourite: they focus on local produce and seasonal dishes and frequently offer a tasting menu that comes paired with wines.

My husband and I are going to be there for about 10 days. We are driving to Portland (we're from Chicago) and taking the Cat ferry across, then will spend a week driving across NS. I am particularly interested in Cape Breton. In a few years we want to move there, so we are going to be making yearly trips to check out different towns, etc.

status:online

Two of my favourite casual-type places are Morris East and Janes' on the Common. Morris East is a few blocks South of where you are, walk south along the boardwalk until you get to Bishop's Landing, which is a condo/apartment development sitting on some restaurants, shops, and services.

Did Fisherman's Terrrace on Westminister Hwy (across the street from Kirin's) move to Aberdeen Centre? We never went to the one on Westminister Hwy because the Chinese gentleman who told us about Fook Yuen said that Kirin's was much better and then suggested that we might like Fook Yuen after we told him that we thought Fortune Restaurant was the best we had found up to that time.

Part of my problem is I went alone (the vegetarian wife and two omnivore kids were busy), so I didn't get the chance to take advantage of the Korean table-top grill dishes. But at $18-$22 each (two orders required), those struck me as overpriced, too.

As Atera doesn't serve any wines by the glass yet, this approach is even more annoying, especially if you're a couple and don't feel like ordering four or five half bottles of wine. Anyhow, we ordered a half bottle of champagne and a bottle of red (teroldego grape) that I'd read about and very much wanted to try.

2. Guu for dinner -- Thurlow/Robson/Gastown vs Aberdeen Centre I've been to all the Guu's (with good experiences) except for the one in Aberdeen. I'll have some friends in town who will want to go to the Richmond night market that night, so I'm thinking the Aberdeen one might be a good bet.
